introduction

Welcome to my little piece of the blogosphere. I started this blog while we were adopting our daughter as a way to keep faraway family and friends up-to-date on the progress. Over the years it has morphed into more of a journal of life in our house . . . as seen through the eyes of a Canadian suburbanite living in a small village in mid-western Finland. Check out the pages above for more info on us, as well as our adoption, and it would please me well if you left a comment to say hello!

soap box derby

Two weeks ago, Joel got to compete in a soap box derby.

P1040511

This is an annual event, held in the town that our village belongs to (as in, “in town”).

Mattias was slightly miffed, because he had been asking for several years to enter, but Stefan has never had time to build a car with them.

P1040512

Joel got to drive The Red Lion, built by the local Lions. They built the car, then had a lottery for kids who wanted to participate but didn’t have a car to drive.

P1040515

We found out on the Monday that he needed to go for a test drive on Tuesday, and then the derby was on Wednesday.

P1040519

There were over 70 racers in the event. He didn’t win or place in any of the categories, but the look on his face said it all. . . .

Yay, Whee! it looks like fun! My nephew Matthew is on Active Duty, he is working with the 3rd highest General right now as his assistant. They fly/drive into some of the worst places everyday to check on men and morale. He will be here for 1 week starting tomorrow, on a short 2 week furlough with the General and then he is back in Iraq until Christmas. This is his 2nd tour, so we pray lots for him and the men around him to be safe. Thanks for asking!

St. Petersburg

Saint Petersburg: Sankt-Peterburg, Russian pronunciation: is a city and a federal subject of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city's other names were Petrograd (1914–1924) and Leningrad (1924–1991). Founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia on 27 May, 1703, it was the capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years (1713–1728, 1732–1918). Saint Petersburg is home to more than two hundred museums, many of them hosted in historic buildings. The largest of the museums is the Hermitage Museum, featuring interiors of the former imperial residence and a vast collection of art. Celebrating the 300th anniversary of its foundation, Saint Petersburg was selected as the main motif in a recent Finnish commemorative coin, the €10 Mannerheim and Saint Petersburg commemorative coin, minted in 2003. The reverse of the coin features a view of Saint Petersburg, with the Peter and Paul Fortress and its three turrets. In the coin the words "St. Petersburg 1703-2003" can be seen.
