introduction

Welcome to my little piece of the blogosphere. I started this blog while we were adopting our daughter as a way to keep faraway family and friends up-to-date on the progress. Over the years it has morphed into more of a journal of life in our house . . . as seen through the eyes of a Canadian suburbanite living in a small village in mid-western Finland. Check out the pages above for more info on us, as well as our adoption, and it would please me well if you left a comment to say hello!

sofia turned 9

Whew!

What a busy couple of weeks we have had!

We just got back from St. Petersburg, Russia yesterday evening . . . but more about that another time.

This post is about Sofia’s 9th birthday, which was one week ago.

Let’s just say, it was her best birthday ever. In the past, PI (post institutional) behaviours have threatened to ruin any special celebrations, or have made special days difficult, at the least.

However, this year, on her birthday, she was as good as gold. She was thrilled with her gifts, and the traditional breakfast in bed. She didn’t complain about anything. She asked often if there was anything she could help with when getting things ready for the parties. It was great.

Here is the day in photos:

Wake up! It’s your birthday!!

P1040712

Opening gifts in bed, followed by breakfast.

P1040714

Her friend party started with BBQ’d burgers and hotdogs on the deck.

P1040717

Then opening more gifts.

P1040722

A few runs through the sprinkler.

P1040729

I made a Hello Kitty cake, even if it wasn’t really the theme of the party.

P1040732

Make a wish!

P1040736

In the evening there was a second party with family – grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, etc. I made a cream cake for that party (but you can see ½ of the Hello Kitty cake hiding behind).

That’s all for nowSmile.

St. Petersburg

Saint Petersburg: Sankt-Peterburg, Russian pronunciation: is a city and a federal subject of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city's other names were Petrograd (1914–1924) and Leningrad (1924–1991). Founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia on 27 May, 1703, it was the capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years (1713–1728, 1732–1918). Saint Petersburg is home to more than two hundred museums, many of them hosted in historic buildings. The largest of the museums is the Hermitage Museum, featuring interiors of the former imperial residence and a vast collection of art. Celebrating the 300th anniversary of its foundation, Saint Petersburg was selected as the main motif in a recent Finnish commemorative coin, the €10 Mannerheim and Saint Petersburg commemorative coin, minted in 2003. The reverse of the coin features a view of Saint Petersburg, with the Peter and Paul Fortress and its three turrets. In the coin the words "St. Petersburg 1703-2003" can be seen.
