introduction

Welcome to my little piece of the blogosphere. I started this blog while we were adopting our daughter as a way to keep faraway family and friends up-to-date on the progress. Over the years it has morphed into more of a journal of life in our house . . . as seen through the eyes of a Canadian suburbanite living in a small village in mid-western Finland. Check out the pages above for more info on us, as well as our adoption, and it would please me well if you left a comment to say hello!

sweet surprises

Every once in a while, Joel and Sofia play really well together. After all, they’re only 19 months apart in age. They have some serious sibling rivalry (which has many complicated layers to it), but there are times when their interests line up, and their moods are just right, so that they can enjoy some good times together. Yesterday, they put on a “cooking show” for me outside my kitchen window:

Then we have this adorable 6 month old puppy, Bella. How cute is she!? How often do dogs lay like this:

Some sweet surprises turn a little messy . . . Mattias told me on the phone one evening that he was making dinner (it was homework for his cooking class). Pizza was on the menu. This was what greeted me:

And, although the pizza tasted really good, school recipes don’t feed a family of six . . .

One final sweet surprise . . . while Joel and I were doing a Bible study at the kitchen table, Sofia was listening and drawing . . . and then slipped this under my telephone:

The sentiment of the drawing is over-the-top sweet, but there are some really funny aspects to the picture, too . . . why are we standing on pedestals? . . .  why am I wearing green shoes with what appears to be a really short top?

Have a great week!

Barb- You notice such detail! I never would have noticed the pedestals... maybe the green shoes though. I love what she wrote on that drawing! Melts my heart! I was just thinking that she and Joel look a lot alike when I looked at your header photo of all four kids. I bet that cooking show was fun to watch! ~Jackie

I love the cooking show!!! I love when the universe aligns all the planets in such a way as to make my kids play nicely together, too...let's see how a couple of days at home on fall break goes ;)

Such a cute drawing Sofia gave you! And, too funny...maybe she's tryin' to tell ya something about how she thinks you should be dressing... ;) But, maybe they're rocks you're standing on...you know, at the cottage...surrounded by water?

Loved "The Show". It is always nice to see and hear the kids getting along and playing together. I see you're coming home for Christmas. I hope we can see you!

yes i too love when the kids will play nice together...hummm seems like a common thread. I thought all brothers/sister, sister/sister, brother/brothers played wonderful together all the time! LOL! You do notice such details in the picture, well maybe she feels like she is so lucky to have you as mother that she is a winner. She is you know, a winner and so are you! Great pics, and love the header pic!

Made me melt, too! The "Cooking Show" looked delightful! And the kitchen was hardly a mess!! Your Bella is so much like Jersey!

If you get green shoes...I will too! But I will not wear the short shirt! Bahaahhaaa! What a great piece of art from Sofia! "LOVE"!

I so hope to see you all soon!
Miss you!
Love from your baby sista!

Did they actually make anything for you to eat? Remember the sandwiches we used to make? Glad to see them getting along "just as well as we did".

The outskirts of St. Pete

St. Petersburg

Saint Petersburg: Sankt-Peterburg, Russian pronunciation: is a city and a federal subject of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city's other names were Petrograd (1914–1924) and Leningrad (1924–1991). Founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia on 27 May, 1703, it was the capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years (1713–1728, 1732–1918). Saint Petersburg is home to more than two hundred museums, many of them hosted in historic buildings. The largest of the museums is the Hermitage Museum, featuring interiors of the former imperial residence and a vast collection of art. Celebrating the 300th anniversary of its foundation, Saint Petersburg was selected as the main motif in a recent Finnish commemorative coin, the €10 Mannerheim and Saint Petersburg commemorative coin, minted in 2003. The reverse of the coin features a view of Saint Petersburg, with the Peter and Paul Fortress and its three turrets. In the coin the words "St. Petersburg 1703-2003" can be seen.
